Client: Pizza Express

As part of the new Liverpool Arena complex, this bespoke building, designed by Wilkinson Eyre, was transformed into a 300 seat restaurant for PizzaExpress. The arena and surrounding area was a major part of the regeneration of this city which, at that time, was the ‘European City of Culture 2008’.

IDP, in collaboration with Creed Design Associates, executed the design and transformed the shell unit into a vibrant and contemporary restaurant.

The 2 storey unit has the majority of diners located on the ground floor along with all facilities and back of house.  A smaller mezzanine level, with its own kitchen located above, gives access to the upper level of the development. A large ‘al fresco’ dining area was located outside both the ground and mezzanine levels. Natural walnut flooring was used throughout, offset with rubber flooring at the service area. Timber clad acoustic panels were suspended from the ceiling in a random pattern to absorb some of the harsher sounds. As the majority of walls consist of glass curtain walling, the internal wall space is limited. The remainder of the walls have been filled with a large bespoke mural, walnut timber paneling and vibrant coloured tiles. All lighting was suspended from the ceiling and was dominated by large bespoke pendants. A new steel and glass helical stair was designed and installed to connect both floors.
